Nethris Magic
There are magics that break bones.
There are magics that burn skies.
And then there is Nethris, the sorcery of hollow names - an art that does not touch flesh or fire, but identity itself.
Practitioners of Nethris are not spellcasters in the common sense. They are un-writers, weaving silence into syllables, stripping people, places, and even gods of the names that anchor them to reality. Without a name, nothing can be remembered. Without remembrance, existence itself begins to unravel.
For the Player
To wield Nethris is to walk a dangerous edge. Every spell requires a Name-Offering - a word of significance given up by the caster. It may be a lover’s name, the name of a childhood street, or even their own. The more names you lose, the harder it becomes to know who you are.
Common forms include:
-
Unbinding: Erase a title or oath, leaving its bearer vulnerable.
-
Veil of Silence: Prevent any NPC from recalling a character for the span of a scene.
-
Namestitch: Transfer the weight of one name to another, making a child carry a king’s burden - or a criminal bear a saint’s fate.
For the Storyteller
Nethris should not be treated as a combat school, but as a narrative disruptor. Its spells affect memory, reputation, and even the Fame system of the world. Use it to complicate loyalties, erase vital clues, or alter what NPCs believe is true.
Above all, remember: a name once consumed is never given back in the same form.
Style
Nethris users often wear bone-charms etched with words they no longer remember, or paint fragments of vanished names across their skin. Their voices carry an unnatural stillness, as if language hesitates before obeying them.
